News item text is a text with inform readers about events of the day.

Social Function of News Item

The social function of news item text is to inform the readers, listeners, or viewers about events of the day which are considered newsworthy or important.

Generic Structure of News Item

Generic structure of news item text are    :

1. Newsworthy event : It recounts the event in a brief form or summary form.

2. Background event : They elaborate what happened, to whom, or in what circumstances.

3. Source : It contains about comments by participants in, witnesses to, and authorities expert on the event.

Language features of News Item Text

- Use past tenses (the simple past, the past continuous, the past perfect).

- Use action verbs (go, walk, run, eat, drive, ride, etc.)

- Use saying verbs (tell, say, shout, answer, complain, etc.)

- Use adverbs of manner (happily, joyfully, slowly, fast, etc.)

- Use adverbs of time and place (one day, after the lesson, in the classroom, through the green grass, etc.)

- Use adjective to form noun phrase (a beautiful, sunny day; a large, green field; a white, shady beach)

- Use conjunction to link sentences (and, but, so, because, for, or)

- Use time connectives (after that, meanwhile, the next morning, then, finally, next, at the end)

- Use pronoun (he, she, they, them, his, her, him, them, we, our, my)

- Use passive voice (Seven people were killed in collision... , The museum was built in...)

Characteristics of News Item

Title

The title of the news is the core of the happenings. The title summarise the sequence of events presented. The title may be sentence or a noun phrase.

Opening

It contains place, time, purpose or reason, and main problem.

Content

It is the extension of the opening. The content of the news must be facts, including informants' opinion towards the events. The use of reported speech to refer the informants' statement, opinion, or criticism is really needed.

NCT's Taeyong has joined Mnet's upcoming TV dance competition Street Woman Fighter (direct translation of its Korean title, '스트릿') as a judge.

South Korean news outlet SPOTV first reported earlier today (July 8) that the NCT member has landed a jury role on Street Woman Fighter, where eight all-female dance crews will compete to become South Korea's number one team.

According to the report, Taeyong was allegedly chosen as a judge for his dancing skills, as he was considered "one of the best performers and dancers in K-pop during his time with NCT, their various subunits, and SuperM", as translated by Koreaboo.
